Coriander (Coriandrum sativum), commonly known as Cilantro or Dhania, is a powerful herb with many health benefits. This plant is rich in micronutrients and nutritional elements. It contains dietary fibre, vitamins and minerals like calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium. Aside from being used in cooking,coriander leaves (cilantro), and seeds, have been used historically, to calm the stomach, reduce fever and lower cholesterol levels. Coriander has been known in Asia for thousands of years and was even found in the tomb of the Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun. Ground coriander powder is perfect for adding to meat as rubs, curries or breads and baked goods like pumpkin pies, sweet potatoes, spice cookies or homemade granola.
Coriander is a fun spice to experiment with. Try it in rice, homemade chicken soup, Chili and all things Mexican, or add a pinch to 1/2 tsp finely chopped ginger, 1/2 tsp fennel seeds and some fresh mint leaves with honey to taste, for a tummy taming mug of tea. Steep 5 min and enjoy.
