Organic Chickpea or Garbanzo flour is a staple in Indian and Middle Eastern cooking and is also known as besan or gram flour. This tasty organic flour is milled from whole dried chickpeas.
Because chickpea flour is ground down from the whole pea it contains the same nutritional value as chickpeas themselves. Just one 25g serving contains high levels of folate and is a source of Copper and Manganese. This makes chickpea flour is a great choice nutritionally and it contains more fibre and protein than wheat flour.
Chickpea flour makes wonderful onion bajhis and has a strong tradition in Indian, Pakistani, Nepali and Bangladeshi cuisines. Chickpea flour works as a binder so it can be used in the place of eggs in vegan cooking. Chickpea flour works in breads, cakes and pancakes for a alternative to traditional wheat based flours. It also combines well with other flours such as tigernut flour, almond flour or buckwheat flour. Use 7/8 cup to replace 1 cup of wheat flour - about 25% of total flour ratio - in flour mixes and recipes. Bean flours can also be used to replace brown rice in gluten free recipes. Sift bean flours twice before using for lighter baked goods.
